What Does Grass-Fed and Finished Mean (and Why It Matters for Your Skin)

You’ll see the terms “grass-fed” and “grass-finished” on tallow skincare labels, but what do they actually mean? And does it really make a difference for your skin? The short answer is yes — a significant one. The longer answer involves understanding how cattle are raised and how their diet directly impacts the nutrient content of the tallow derived from their fat.

Grass-Fed vs. Grass-Finished: The Distinction That Matters

Here’s where the labeling gets tricky. In the United States, the term “grass-fed” alone doesn’t tell you much. All cattle eat grass at the beginning of their lives. The question is what happens after that.

Grass-fed only: The animal ate grass at some point, but may have been moved to a feedlot and “finished” on grain (corn, soy) for the last several months of its life. This is the industry standard for most beef in America.

Grass-fed AND finished: The animal ate grass and forage for its entire life, from birth to processing. It was never fed grain. This is significantly less common and results in a different nutritional profile.

The finishing period matters because it’s when the animal puts on the most fat — and that fat is what becomes tallow. An animal finished on grain produces fat with a different fatty acid composition than one finished on grass.

How Diet Affects Tallow Quality

Research on grass-fed versus grain-fed beef consistently shows measurable differences in nutrient content:

  • Higher omega-3 fatty acids. Grass-finished beef has 2–5 times more omega-3s than grain-finished. These are anti-inflammatory fats that benefit your skin.

  • More conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). CLA is a naturally occurring fatty acid that researchers have studied for its potential properties. Grass-fed tallow contains higher levels than grain-fed.

  • Richer in fat-soluble vitamins. Cattle that eat diverse grass and forage produce fat with higher concentrations of vitamins A, D, E, and K — all of which are critical for skin health.

  • Better omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. Grain-finished cattle produce fat that’s disproportionately high in omega-6 fatty acids, which are pro-inflammatory. Grass-finished cattle have a much more balanced ratio.

Why This Matters for Skincare

When you apply tallow to your skin, you’re delivering these nutrients topically. Fat-soluble vitamins absorb through the skin’s lipid barrier, and the fatty acid profile determines how well the product integrates with your skin’s natural oils.

Tallow from grain-finished cattle isn’t harmful, but it’s less nutrient-dense and more inflammatory than tallow from grass-finished cattle. If you’re using tallow skincare specifically for its nourishing and restorative properties, the sourcing makes a real difference in what your skin actually receives.

How to Evaluate a Tallow Skincare Brand’s Sourcing

Not all brands are transparent about their sourcing, and some use vague language to obscure the reality. Here’s what to look for:

  • Look for “grass-fed AND finished” or “grass-fed AND grass-finished.” If a brand only says “grass-fed,” it may mean the cattle were grain-finished.

  • Ask about the farm. Brands that know where their tallow comes from will happily tell you. If they can’t name a farm or region, they’re likely using mass-produced tallow of unknown origin.

  • Check for rendering method. Dry-rendered tallow processed at low temperatures retains more nutrients than wet-rendered or high-heat processed tallow.

Our Commitment to Sourcing

At Good Tallow Co., every product is made with 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef suet. We don’t use grain-finished tallow, and we don’t blend different sources. We know where our suet comes from, and we dry-render it ourselves at low temperatures to preserve the full spectrum of vitamins and beneficial fatty acids.

We believe that if you’re going to put something on your skin, it should be the highest quality possible. The same way you’d choose grass-fed beef for your family’s dinner table, we believe your skin deserves grass-fed tallow too.
