Tallow for Babies and Kids: What We’ve Learned as Parents
We’re going to be honest with you — we didn’t start Good Tallow Co. because we had all the answers about skincare. We started it because we were two moms trying to find something simple and clean to put on our own kids’ skin, and we kept coming up short.
Every lotion at the store had an ingredient list we couldn’t pronounce. The “natural” options still contained synthetic preservatives and fragrances. Even the ones labeled “for sensitive skin” had 20+ ingredients. We just wanted something we could actually understand and feel good about.
That search led us to tallow. And we want to share what we’ve learned — not as skincare experts making big promises, but as parents who’ve walked this path ourselves.
Why We Think About Children’s Skincare Differently
Children’s skin is different from adults’ in ways that matter. It’s thinner, still developing, and more permeable — meaning it absorbs a higher percentage of whatever is applied to it. This isn’t a scare tactic; it’s just biology. And it’s why a lot of parents, once they learn this, start paying closer attention to ingredient lists.
We’re not here to tell you that everything on the shelf is dangerous. But we do think it’s worth asking: if your child’s skin absorbs more of what’s put on it, does it make sense to choose products with the fewest, simplest ingredients possible? For our families, the answer was yes.
What Tallow Is (and Isn’t)
Tallow is rendered beef fat. That’s it. When it comes from grass-fed and finished cattle and is properly dry-rendered at low temperatures, it’s a clean, stable fat that’s naturally rich in the same types of fatty acids found in human skin.
We want to be clear about what tallow is not: it’s not a medicine. It’s not a treatment for any skin condition. We don’t make health claims about it, and we’d encourage you to be skeptical of any brand that does. What we can tell you is that it’s a deeply moisturizing, nutrient-dense fat with a very simple composition — and that our families use it every day.
Why Simple Ingredients Matter for Kids
Here’s something we think about a lot: the fewer ingredients in a product, the easier it is to know what’s touching your child’s skin. If a moisturizer has four ingredients and your child has a reaction, it’s pretty straightforward to figure out the cause. If it has 25 ingredients, good luck.
Our OG Whole-Body Tallow has four ingredients:
-
Grass-fed and finished beef suet
-
Organic jojoba oil
-
Organic castor oil
-
Organic geranium essential oil
That’s the whole list. We’re not hiding anything behind terms like “fragrance” or “proprietary blend.” Every ingredient is there for a reason, and you can look up each one yourself.
How Parents in Our Community Use Tallow
We hear from families all the time about how they incorporate tallow into their routines. We want to share some of the common ways people use it — with the caveat that we’re sharing what other parents do, not prescribing what you should do. Every child is different, and you know your child best.
-
After bath time: A small amount applied to slightly damp skin after a bath is the most common use. It’s a simple way to lock in moisture, especially during dry winter months.
-
Dry patches: Many parents apply a thin layer to areas prone to dryness — cheeks, elbows, knees, hands.
-
Before outdoor play: A light application to exposed skin before cold or windy weather can help protect against chapping.
-
As a daily moisturizer: Some families use tallow as their child’s only moisturizer, replacing synthetic lotions entirely.
Being Honest About What We Don’t Know
We believe in being upfront about the limits of what we can say. We’re not dermatologists. We’re not scientists. We’re two sisters who make skincare in small batches with ingredients we trust.
If your child has a specific skin condition, please talk to their pediatrician or dermatologist. We would never want a parent to use our product in place of medical advice. What we offer is a simple, clean moisturizer — nothing more, nothing less.
We also can’t promise that tallow will work perfectly for every child. Skin is incredibly individual. What works beautifully for one child might not be right for another. That’s not a failure of the product; it’s just the reality of how skin works.
How to Introduce Tallow to Your Child’s Skin
If you’d like to try tallow on your child, here’s what we’d suggest:
-
Patch test first. Apply a small amount to the inside of their forearm or behind their ear. Wait 24 hours. If there’s no redness, irritation, or discomfort, it’s likely fine to use more broadly.
-
Start small. You don’t need much. A tiny amount goes a long way on small bodies.
-
Watch and adjust. Pay attention to how their skin responds over the first week. You’ll know pretty quickly whether it’s a good fit.
Why We Made This for Our Families First
Before Good Tallow Co. was a business, it was just two moms making balm in a kitchen for our own kids. We tried it on our own families first, lived with it, and used it daily before we ever offered it to anyone else. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to: we don’t sell anything we wouldn’t put on our own children.
We’re not the flashiest brand. We don’t make miracle claims. We just make simple, honest skincare with ingredients you can count on one hand. If that resonates with how you think about caring for your family, we’d love for you to give The OG a try.
