Tallow for Oily Skin: Why It Works Better Than You’d Think

If someone told you to put animal fat on oily skin, your first reaction would probably be: absolutely not. We get it. It sounds like the last thing you’d want to do. And honestly, when we first learned about tallow skincare, we had the same reaction.

But after using it on our own skin — and hearing from so many people who’ve had the same surprising experience — we want to share what we’ve observed. Not as a promise, but as a conversation.

The Counterintuitive Logic

Here’s the thing about oily skin that took us a while to understand: oily doesn’t necessarily mean over-moisturized. In fact, sometimes skin produces more oil precisely because it’s not getting the right kind of moisture.

Think about it this way. If you wash your hands with a really harsh soap, they might feel dry and tight. But within an hour, they’re oily again. Your skin is trying to compensate for what was stripped away. A lot of oily-skin routines work the same way — strip, compensate, strip, compensate. It’s a cycle.

Tallow doesn’t strip anything. It provides the types of fats that are similar to what your skin produces naturally. The idea is that when your skin gets the moisture it actually recognizes, it doesn’t have to work so hard on its own. We’ve seen this play out for many people, though we want to be honest: it doesn’t work the same way for everyone.

Why Tallow Feels Different on Oily Skin

One of the things we hear most often from people with oily skin is surprise at how tallow absorbs. They expect it to sit on top and feel greasy. Instead, it tends to sink in relatively quickly and leave skin feeling comfortable — not shiny, not tight, just… normal.

This has to do with biological similarity. Tallow’s fatty acid profile closely resembles the natural oils your skin produces (called sebum). Because of this similarity, tallow integrates with your skin’s existing lipid layer rather than sitting on top of it like a foreign substance.

Compare that to some plant oils, which have very different fatty acid profiles. Coconut oil, for example, is a common natural moisturizer that many people with oily skin find too heavy and pore-clogging. Tallow is a different experience entirely.

What We Suggest If You Want to Try It

We always recommend the same cautious approach, especially for oily skin types:

  • Start with a tiny amount. We mean tiny — like half a pea-sized dab for your whole face. You can always add more, but you can’t take it back. With tallow, less really is more.

  • Apply to damp skin. After washing your face, pat it so it’s still slightly damp, then apply the tallow. It seems to absorb more evenly this way.

  • Give it an honest two weeks. Your skin has been used to whatever routine you’ve had. Switching to something fundamentally different takes an adjustment period. Some people notice their skin feels slightly different in the first week before it settles.

  • Pay attention. Your skin will tell you whether it likes tallow. If it feels good — comfortable, balanced, not overly oily — that’s a good sign. If it doesn’t work for you, that’s okay too.

What We Don’t Claim

We’re not going to tell you tallow will clear your skin, solve your oil problems, or replace your dermatologist. We don’t know your skin, your history, or your specific concerns. What we know is that tallow is a simple, nutrient-dense moisturizer that a lot of people — including people with oily skin — find works well for them.

We also know that simpler routines tend to be gentler on skin. Our OG Whole-Body Tallow has four ingredients. Four. That’s appealing to a lot of people who are tired of 15-step routines with ingredients they can’t identify.

The Simplicity Factor

One thing we’ve noticed in our own experience and in conversations with our customers: a lot of skin frustration comes from doing too much. Too many products, too many active ingredients, too much of everything. The skin gets overwhelmed.

Tallow is the opposite of overwhelming. It’s one ingredient doing one job — moisturizing. We add organic jojoba oil (which is one of the few plant-derived substances that closely mimics human sebum), organic castor oil, and a small amount of organic essential oil for scent. That’s it.

We think there’s something to be said for giving your skin less to process. Not as a miracle cure, but as a sensible starting point. If that resonates with you, our OG Whole-Body Tallow is a good place to begin.
