Jojoba Oil in Skincare: Why We Include It in Every Product

If you look at the ingredient list on any Good Tallow Co. product, you’ll notice that organic jojoba oil appears in every single one. That’s not an accident. Jojoba oil is one of the few plant-based oils that we believe genuinely earns its place alongside grass-fed tallow in skincare. Here’s why.

Jojoba Isn’t Actually an Oil

Technically, jojoba “oil” is a liquid wax ester. This distinction matters because wax esters are remarkably similar in structure to the sebum your skin naturally produces. In fact, jojoba is the closest plant-derived match to human sebum that exists in nature.

This means that when you apply jojoba to your skin, your skin treats it almost identically to its own oil. It absorbs quickly, doesn’t feel greasy, and integrates seamlessly with your natural lipid barrier. This is why jojoba works so well for every skin type — from very dry to very oily.

How Jojoba Complements Tallow

Tallow and jojoba work together beautifully because they approach skin nourishment from different angles:

  • Tallow provides deep, saturated-fat-based moisture and delivers fat-soluble vitamins. It’s rich, dense, and deeply nourishing.

  • Jojoba provides lightweight, wax-ester-based moisture that balances oil production and helps the tallow absorb more evenly.

The combination gives you the best of both worlds: the deep nourishment of animal fat with the lightweight balance of a plant-based wax ester. This is why our products feel rich but not heavy — the jojoba tempers the richness of the tallow and improves the overall texture.

Benefits of Jojoba Oil for Skin

  • Balances oil production. Because jojoba mimics sebum, it signals to your skin that it doesn’t need to produce as much oil. This makes it beneficial for both dry and oily skin types.

  • Non-comedogenic. Jojoba has a very low likelihood of clogging pores, making it safe for acne-prone skin.

  • Smoothing. Soothing. Jojoba is known for its gentle, soothing qualities that leave skin feeling comfortable and calm.

  • Fast absorbing. Unlike heavier oils, jojoba absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue.

  • Naturally stable. Jojoba resists oxidation better than most plant oils, which means it doesn’t go rancid easily and helps extend the shelf life of products it’s blended with.

Why Organic Matters

We use only organic, cold-pressed jojoba oil. Cold pressing extracts the oil mechanically without heat or chemical solvents, preserving its natural nutrients and wax ester structure. Conventionally processed jojoba oil may be extracted using hexane or other chemical solvents and refined at high temperatures, which strips out beneficial compounds.

Organic certification also ensures that the jojoba plants were grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers — residues of which can end up in the extracted oil and ultimately on your skin.

The Ingredient Philosophy

Including jojoba in every product is part of our broader philosophy: every ingredient must serve a clear purpose, and every ingredient must be the highest quality available. We don’t add ingredients for marketing appeal or to pad an ingredient list. Jojoba is in our products because it makes them work better — period.
